The report “Petroleum in the Brazilian Equatorial Margin” was organized by a group of 12 experts, coordinated by the vice president of ABC, Jailson Bittencourt de Andrade, and launched in August 2025. “We are showing what can happen in an eventual exploitation”, stressed the Academic.

The Brazilian equatorial margin, especially at the mouth of the Amazon, is characterized by an extensive continental shelf with high ecological complexity and oceanographic dynamics, marked by strong currents, such as the North Current of Brazil. These currents are central to risk assessment, as they determine the dispersion of an eventual oil spill. In this context, continuous computational modeling, based on the best scientific evidence and rigorous protocols, is essential for impact simulation and reliable environmental monitoring.

The text also highlights the potential impacts of accidents on biodiversity and the regional economy, with an emphasis on mangroves and reefs. Mangroves, particularly at the mouth of the Amazon, sustain a rich biodiversity and ample fishing resources, fundamental for coastal communities, functioning as true marine nurseries. The Amazonian reefs, located in deep waters and still little studied, are vulnerable ecosystems, with slow growth and low recovery capacity, requiring special care and mitigation measures in any exploratory activity.
