{"id":1036,"date":"2026-01-23T16:06:38","date_gmt":"2026-01-23T19:06:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/memoria.abc.org.br\/roquette-pinto-and-the-history-of-radio-in-brazil\/"},"modified":"2026-01-26T11:48:01","modified_gmt":"2026-01-26T14:48:01","slug":"roquette-pinto-and-the-history-of-radio-in-brazil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/memoria.abc.org.br\/en\/roquette-pinto-and-the-history-of-radio-in-brazil\/","title":{"rendered":"Roquette-Pinto and the History of Radio in Brazil"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>More than a hundred years ago, on <strong>April 20, 1923<\/strong>, a group of scientists and professors created the <strong>Radio Society of Rio de Janeiro (RS).<\/strong> A pioneer here, it was not born by state initiative or as a private company, but as a <strong>civil entity<\/strong>, a society maintained by its partners and sustained by the voluntary work of many. It was an innovative initiative with a great impact in Brazil at the time.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"862\" height=\"574\" src=\"https:\/\/memoria.abc.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/FIG_1_Diretores-e-socios-da-Radio-Sociedade.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-889\" srcset=\"https:\/\/memoria.abc.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/FIG_1_Diretores-e-socios-da-Radio-Sociedade.png 862w, https:\/\/memoria.abc.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/FIG_1_Diretores-e-socios-da-Radio-Sociedade-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/memoria.abc.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/FIG_1_Diretores-e-socios-da-Radio-Sociedade-768x511.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 862px) 100vw, 862px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Directors and members of Radio Society \u2013 (From left to right, seated) Carlos Guinle, Enrique Morize and Luiz Betim Paes Leme; (standing) Dulc\u00eddio Pereira, Francisco Lafayette, Roquette-Pinto, Dem\u00f3crito Seabra, Mario de Souza, Costa Lima and Nestor Serra<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Its Statute clearly defined the purpose of the station:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;Founded exclusively for scientific, technical, artistic purposes and pure popular education, it will never be involved in any matter of a professional, industrial, commercial or political nature.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>1936<\/strong>, Radio Society was donated to the &#8220;Brazilian people&#8221;, passing to the administration of the State, through the federal government, becoming <strong>Radio MEC<\/strong>, which built a centennial history of contributions to Brazilian culture and education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Edgar Roquette-Pinto and the Brazilian Academy of Sciences<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The great engine behind the creation of Radio Society was <strong>Edgar Roquette-Pinto<\/strong> (1884\u20131954), a physician, anthropologist, educator and communications enthusiast in Brazil. In 1923, Roquette-Pinto mobilized his colleagues from the <strong>Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC),<\/strong> created seven years earlier, of which he was secretary-general. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/memoria.abc.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/FIG_2_Edgard-Roquette-Pinto-nos-anos-50.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-891\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Edgard Roquette-Pinto in the 50s<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>He especially had the support of <strong>Henrique Morize<\/strong>, then president of ABC, who also assumed the presidency of R\u00e1dio Sociedade. The initial financing for the acquisition of the equipment came from businessmen such as <strong>Dem\u00f3crito Seabra<\/strong> (treasurer of RS) and <strong>Carlos Guinle<\/strong>. With the subscription of a significant number of members and the sponsorship of a few companies, it was possible to maintain the radio for <strong>13 years<\/strong>, preserving its educational and non-commercial character.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The struggle for radiotelephony and the technical challenges<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Between <strong>1924 and 1928<\/strong>, Radio Society and ABC occupied the <strong>Czechoslovak Pavilion<\/strong>, built for the Centenary of Independence, on Avenida das Na\u00e7\u00f5es. After the demolition of the building, R\u00e1dio Sociedade moved to Rua da Carioca, while ABC remained without a fixed headquarters for many years. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"454\" height=\"654\" src=\"https:\/\/memoria.abc.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/FIG_3_Pavilhao-Tchecoslovaco.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-893\" srcset=\"https:\/\/memoria.abc.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/FIG_3_Pavilhao-Tchecoslovaco.jpg 454w, https:\/\/memoria.abc.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/FIG_3_Pavilhao-Tchecoslovaco-208x300.jpg 208w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 454px) 100vw, 454px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Czechoslovak Pavilion<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>In the early years, ABC and R\u00e1dio Sociedade led a successful struggle with the federal government for the liberation of the use of <strong>&#8220;wireless telephony&#8221; (TSF)<\/strong> or <strong>radiotelephony<\/strong>, as radio transmission was then called. They contributed to putting an end to the anachronistic requirement of a license for the installation of receivers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The technical difficulties were many. The technology was cutting-edge \u2014 the world&#8217;s first radio station had appeared just three years earlier, in the United States. It was necessary to <strong>learn by doing<\/strong>, inventing solutions at each step, both for the technical aspects and for the construction of the contents. For many years, Radio Society was the <strong>most powerful broadcaster in South America<\/strong>.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Science in the air: classes, lectures and dissemination of knowledge<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Roquette-Pinto was the radio news presenter. He read and commented on the news by mouth, after a thorough reading of the newspapers, in which he marked in pencil the main points. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Classes and lectures on science and culture began to be broadcast regularly, taught by scientists and professors from institutions such as the National Museum, the Polytechnic School and the Manguinhos Institute. Among them, <strong>M\u00e1rio Saraiva<\/strong> and <strong>Cust\u00f3dio Jos\u00e9 da Silva <\/strong>(Chemistry), <strong>Francisco Venancio Filho <\/strong>(Physics), <strong>Mello Leit\u00e3o <\/strong>(Natural History), <strong>Alberto Sampaio <\/strong>(Botany), <strong>Sebasti\u00e3o Barroso <\/strong>(Hygiene) and <strong>Ferdinando Laboriau<\/strong>, <strong>Jo\u00e3o Ribeiro<\/strong>, <strong>Mauricio Joppert and Othon Leonardos<\/strong> (Geosciences). &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, there were classes in literature, English and history. No sound recordings of these programs were found, but it is instigating to imagine how the listeners, equipped with <strong>galena receivers<\/strong> (primitive or crystal radios), with frequent problems with tuning and sound quality, were able to follow physics, chemistry or geology classes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Music, culture and editorial production<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>R\u00e1dio Sociedade was also a pioneer in <strong>the dissemination of classical music<\/strong> in Brazil, broadcasting concerts and operas, often in their entirety. Over time, and at the insistence of listeners, popular music became a strong part of the program. Several artists performed or emerged on the microphones of RS or, later, of Radio MEC, such as <strong>Catulo da Paix\u00e3o Cearense<\/strong>, <strong>Paulo Autran<\/strong>, <strong>Fernanda Montenegro<\/strong>, <strong>Edino Krieger<\/strong>, among many others. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"457\" height=\"684\" src=\"https:\/\/memoria.abc.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/FIG_4_capa-Electron.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-897\" srcset=\"https:\/\/memoria.abc.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/FIG_4_capa-Electron.jpg 457w, https:\/\/memoria.abc.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/FIG_4_capa-Electron-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 457px) 100vw, 457px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Cover of Electron magazine, N.3, Year 1<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Radio Society functioned as a true <strong>cultural complex<\/strong>, with a library, reading room, technical laboratory, auditorium, orchestra, studios and editorial production. Two magazines were created: <strong>R\u00e1dio<\/strong> (1923), focused on the dissemination of science and themes related to broadcasting; and <strong>Electron<\/strong> (1926), a bimonthly publication of radio culture, distributed to members, with a circulation of 3,000 copies, bringing the complete programming of the station. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Einstein, Marie Curie and Radio Society<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>1925<\/strong>, <strong>Albert Einstein<\/strong> visited Radio Society, after making a communication on ABC about the quanta of light. His speech was broadcast live, in German, with immediate translation into Portuguese: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;After my visit to this Radio Society, I cannot help but once again admire the splendid results that science has reached, combined with technique&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"985\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/memoria.abc.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/FIG_5_Albert-Einstein-na-ABC.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-901\" srcset=\"https:\/\/memoria.abc.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/FIG_5_Albert-Einstein-na-ABC.png 985w, https:\/\/memoria.abc.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/FIG_5_Albert-Einstein-na-ABC-300x208.png 300w, https:\/\/memoria.abc.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/FIG_5_Albert-Einstein-na-ABC-768x532.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 985px) 100vw, 985px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">&nbsp;<em>Albert Einstein visiting ABC and Radio Society (1925), then located in the Czechoslovak Pavilion<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A newspaper of the time recorded that the Radio Society orchestra performed works by <strong>Francisco Braga<\/strong>, <strong>Alberto Nepomuceno<\/strong>, <strong>Ernesto Nazareth<\/strong> and <strong>Belm\u00e1cio Godinho<\/strong> for Einstein, and the choro <em>Mulatinho<\/em> was particularly applauded by the scientist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>1926<\/strong>, it was the turn of <strong>Marie Curie<\/strong>, whose lectures on radioactivity at the Polytechnic School were broadcast, in French, by Radio Society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Early childhood education on the radio: the &#8220;Children&#8217;s Quarter of an Hour&#8221;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>1924<\/strong>, the educator <strong>Jo\u00e3o K\u00f6pke<\/strong> proposed to Roquette-Pinto a program dedicated to children: the <strong>&#8220;Children&#8217;s Quarter of an Hour&#8221;.<\/strong> Started with K\u00f6pke himself, as &#8220;Grandpa&#8221;, the program was hugely successful. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"792\" height=\"580\" src=\"https:\/\/memoria.abc.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/FIG_6_Beatriz-Roquette-Pinto.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-905\" srcset=\"https:\/\/memoria.abc.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/FIG_6_Beatriz-Roquette-Pinto.png 792w, https:\/\/memoria.abc.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/FIG_6_Beatriz-Roquette-Pinto-300x220.png 300w, https:\/\/memoria.abc.org.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/FIG_6_Beatriz-Roquette-Pinto-768x562.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 792px) 100vw, 792px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Beatriz Roquette-Pinto, known as Aunt Beatriz, surrounded by children in the broadcaster&#8217;s studio (Revista Carioca, n. 25, 11\/04\/1936)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After his death, he was led by <strong>&#8220;Aunt Joanna&#8221;<\/strong> (Heloisa Alberto Torres) and, from <strong>1930<\/strong>, by <strong>&#8220;Aunt Beatriz&#8221;,<\/strong> <strong>Beatriz Roquette-Pinto<\/strong>, daughter of the founder, then 19 years old. The program also answered questions sent by the children, many of them of a scientific nature. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The donation to the State and the birth of Radio MEC<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The expansion of commercial radios and the technical requirements of the new legislation of the 1930s made it unfeasible to maintain R\u00e1dio Sociedade in its non-commercial structure. In <strong>1936<\/strong>, Roquette-Pinto carefully articulated the incorporation of RS into the federal government, with the mediation of Minister <strong>Gustavo Capanema<\/strong> and <strong>Carlos Drummond de Andrade<\/strong>, his chief of staff. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Get\u00falio Vargas<\/strong> assured that the station&#8217;s original objectives would be preserved. Radio Society was then donated to the State, linked to the Ministry of Education and Health, changing its name to <strong>Radio Ministry of Education<\/strong>, today <strong>Radio MEC<\/strong>, which, despite recent difficult times, needs and should survive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>&#8220;Radiotelephony will be the greatest school of the future&#8221;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We close this story \u2014 a fundamental part of the history of science, education and culture in Brazil \u2014 with the words of Roquette-Pinto himself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;Radiotelephony will be the greatest school of the future.&#8221;<\/em><br><em>&#8220;Radio is the newspaper of those who cannot read; he is the teacher of those who cannot go to school&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><br><em>&#8220;What a way to transform a man in a few minutes, if you employ him willingly, with heart and soul!&#8221;<\/em>Radio Society was the <strong>real product of an altruistic dream of scientists<\/strong>, focused on Brazilian education, culture and science. For his main mentor, <strong>dreaming was essential \u2014 and acting, indispensable<\/strong>.
